A great example of our self build home portfolio, Haneton is the realisation of the client’s long-held family ambition to reoccupy the heart of their 80 acre farm. Taking our cue from the traditional farmstead, it consists of two simple and parallel charred timber-clad buildings, a central courtyard, and two-storey conical building formed of rammed earth – the last of which punctuates the orthogonal arrangement to create a so-called hygge suite, with a fire-pit and sunken bath on the first floor.

1. Budget

Your budget is a vital factor to consider when you plan to self-build. It could cost between £1,000 and £3,000 per square foot to turn your housing dreams into a reality. However, these numbers are usually influenced by location, design, specification, and so on. Fortunately, there are several ways to raise funds for your self-build project, from securing a self-build mortgage to remortgaging your estate, selling your existing property, etc.

2. Land availability

To build, you must find land. There are many platforms you can use to help you find available land. These include newspapers, TV, and radio. Be sure to consider the various elements you would like in your home, such as gardens, easy to maintain, and spacious. You should also consider the location of the land and the availability of various utilities such as water and electricity. Lastly, you should consider the size of your family and the style of home you would like to build as this may affect the land needed.

3. Structure and design

The structure you choose will have a significant impact on the performance and appearance of your completed home. However, bricks and blocks, oak, wood, thin joint blocks and structural insulation panels are common choices. Fortunately, various digital design applications make it easy for you to visualise your preferred design to see if it is compatible with your request.

4. Hiring builders and contractors
