Design begins with feeling – for place, for the past, for the needs and wants of the now, and for a future that matters. It listens. It empathises. It’s pragmatic. It’s an understanding that informs everything we do. It makes buildings that work – truly, beautifully. This is how we approach all architect houses projects.

An architecture and design practice is nothing without its people, and the very best practices are those in which everyone has a voice – however different it may be. We are extremely fortunate Hollaway is exactly this: an extraordinary bunch of thinkers, talkers, and doers. These are the people that get buildings made.

Hollaway’s approach to house design always starts with people and place.  How does a building contribute to the community it will inhabit? How will people interact and engage with the architecture created in this space?  Under his leadership and hands on approach Guy Hollaway has created a design-led Practice committed to innovative building solutions, with work ranging from prestigious one off commissions to large scale regeneration projects.

Sustainability considerations when designing a new house

Data suggest that houses built in the UK have some sustainability issues. First of all, research indicates that 30% of overall energy consumption comes from houses. Additionally, 27% of carbon emissions are attributed to the same. With these statistics, it is logical for people to focus on sustainability when designing new houses. Below are some ideas on how to build houses with the environment in mind.

Use Recycled Or Reclaimed Materials

Recycled and reclaimed materials are excellent for sustainable architect houses construction. Admittedly, it is vital to know what is needed and where to source them from. Some recycled materials may not be ideal for construction mainly because of the potential to be hazardous in the long term. However, putting that aside, recycled materials are sustainable because they cut back on the continuous environmental pollution in the world.

Indeed, the availability of these materials contributes significantly to their usage. In the meantime, recycled glass can be used as part of the kitchen cabinetry. Additionally, recycled or reclaimed wood can be used as efficient materials for a new project. The idea is, anything that can be safely reused or recycled makes a significant difference in designing a sustainable home. Furthermore, if your mission is to reuse soils for a current project, you may want to turn your attention to excavations made on site.

Design The House In The Direction Of Natural Light And Heat

Orientation is a vital factor to consider when designing or building a new home. Indeed, this depends on where you are. For example, if you live in the coldest parts of the UK, it would be advantageous to position the house to receive more sun, natural light, and heat.

Again, when you’re thinking of building your home in the South of England, you may want to take specific considerations. This area is known to be the warmest part of the UK. Therefore, it helps to design the house in a way that suits all four seasons.

Additionally, large trees planted in the direction of some windows can block out uncomfortable glares emitted from the sun. However, this works out if your windows face westward. The idea behind house orientation is to minimise energy waste while going big on sustainability. In other words, the less negative impact it has on the environment, the better for you and the world as a whole.

Source Building Materials Locally

When you have to ship several containers of building materials, that doesn’t augur well for the environment. Moreover, it defeats the purpose of sustainability. Admittedly, the location of your house determines to a large extent whether your building materials will be sourced locally or not.

For this reason, it may be vital to research building materials you can quickly get in the area. Again, it will be helpful to observe other buildings in the immediate community to determine the common materials used. For example, if stones are in abundance there, it would be an excellent idea to use that for your patio, garden shed, or portions of the main house.

The 21st-century world continues to emphasise a sustainable environment. This makes it imperative for houses to infuse sustainability into their design and construction. Houses designed by architects usually meet these requirements. Therefore, it is advisable to get one to design your houses.
