We have successfully presented our scheme for Whiffens Avenue, Chatham, in Public and Committee Members Consultation.
The proposal is a first for Medway Development Company which has been created by Medway Council to deliver high quality new homes in support of the regeneration for Chatham.
The site, a former military burial ground, is currently an under used carpark. Proposals are for circa 120 contemporary apartments which overlook The Town Hall Gardens Park, the historic setting of Fort Amherst behind and the Great Lines Heritage Park surrounds – a 70 hectare regional park that was created from a site that is of international heritage significance.
The view from ‘The Brook’ below has been carefully considered to allow a glimpse of the building from the road but not to impose on the historic wall it sits in front of. The staggered form of the building’s mass replicates the stepping of the adjacent tree fringed embankment that runs north to south whilst green roofs and vertical landscaping, which reflect the regional park, soften the brick material pallet, allowing the building to blend into its surrounding environment.
The Public Consultation invited local residents to have their say about the future of Whiffens Avenue. Responses were overwhelmingly encouraging and the event has given the design team valuable points to take on board as they approach submitting for Planning in July.
