Hollaway is an award-winning architectural practice that embraces the past, the present, and the future and places people and feeling at the core of its architecture philosophy.

In 2020, we were awarded the Hackney Design Awards People’s Choice Award Winner for purpose built co-working space The Fisheries.  The same year we also won the RICS South East Awards Commercial Category Winner for Curious Brewery in Kent.  With 20+ awards under our belt, we have created a name for ourselves designing outstanding buildings and spaces for our ambitious clients.

Design begins with feeling – for place, for the past, for the needs and wants of the now, and for a future that matters. It listens. It empathises. It’s pragmatic. It’s an understanding that informs everything we do. It makes buildings that work – truly, beautifully. This is how we approach all projects.

An architecture practice is nothing without its people, and the very best practices are those in which everyone has a voice – however different it may be. We are extremely fortunate Hollaway is exactly this: an extraordinary bunch of thinkers, talkers, and doers. These are the people that get buildings made.

Annabel Sawyer, an architect at Hollaway Studio, is the lead architect on the world’s first multi-storey skatepark. A very unique project in that there are so many aspects of the design that were outside of the usual building typology that Hollaway had previously worked on. There was a considerable amount of research, development and prototype testing that was undertaken to ensure that the concepts work.

Creative thinking was required at all stages of the project, not just in design but also in construction methodology and it was really a team effort to get the project out of the ground. As lead architect Annabel really worked closely with the Engineers, Skate Park Designers, Climbing Wall Designers, Builders and Manufacturers to make the complex design a reality.

The RIBA award-winning architecture and design practice has built its reputation working on a wide array of projects, including a cutting-edge skate park, the world’s first heritage theme park, a bespoke artist’s studio in an open field, and a high-end seafood restaurant. The breadth of these projects may be wide, but each one brings the perfect balance of playfulness and sincerity, with a firm focus on placemaking, sustainability and the experience of the individuals who will use the space.

Prestigious architectural awards in the UK

How can you be sure that you have found an architect that you can trust? There are many ways and things to look out for, including testimonials, appraisals from people you know and trust, and looking at their past projects to see if you like the look of them. But another, more trustworthy way is to look at what accolades and awards they have won. If there are a lot to their name, then you know that you are in good hands with your architectural project.

Over the years, Hollaway Studio has won some of the most prestigious architectural awards in the UK. Here are some of the most recognised of these.

Hackney Design Awards

In 2020, Hollaway Studio won the people’s choice award in the Hackney Design Awards for The Fisheries. The Hackney Design Awards posit themselves as a ‘celebration of great design in Hackney’ and it is one of the most widely-respected of such awards anywhere in the UK. The Fisheries is a mixed-use scheme of 31 residential units alongside 24,000 square ft of commercial co-working space, and was voted by the popular vote as winner of this category.

RICS South East Awards

The RICS awards are all about social change and social impact, with a celebration of a building or structure’s ‘positive and transformational contribution to society’. The awards are separated into categories, and for the South East awards, the winner in the commercial category was Hollaway Studio. The winning project was Curious Brewery in Ashford, known as a cathedral of brewery in the area and particularly attractive for its iconic appearance and location. It is a truly eye-catching design.

RIBA South East

Hollaway Studio was also the Regional Award Winner in 2019 for the RIBA South East awards, for their project the Process Gallery. RIBA is the Royal Institute of British Architecture, and operates all over the country, with prizes in many areas. This is just another example of Hollaway’s ability to impress judges and members of the public alike, and it’s an accolade anyone would be proud of.

George Clarke Medal

Another winning entry for Hollaway Studio was the George Clarke Medal, where they won in 2018 for The Cottage. This was the inaugural year of the award, and it hoped to celebrate the best refurbishment schemes for residential homes. George Clarke himself said of The Cottage that it was ‘renovation poetry’, and anyone who sets an eye on it has to agree it is a truly stunning space.
